Is there an origin of "wanker"?

I believe that it orininated from an abbreviation of a popular late eighteenth century music hall song "Hookey Walker". William Hone mentions the irritating habit of London shop boys yelling the song title at anyone they thought looked riculous. Others have suggested that it comes from the German 'wanken' to shake; but then it would be pronounced using a "v", surely?
